The handwritten note on the back reads 'A drawing from one of the preparations of the late Dr Kirby – which he was of the habit of exhibiting at lectures as a case of varicose aneurism such seen in the [?] but dissection proved the case to be merely a gorgonios[?] knob of varicose veins – The p.t dies in the H.l of Industry'.

The handwritten note on the back reads 'The tumour here represented is stated to have been an aneurism of the subclavian artery & that it underwent a spontaneous cure. The patient was in Steeven's Hospital'.

The handwritten note on the back reads 'Richmond Hospital Museum. In July 1840 this patient began to suffer severely from pains in the head & in the back of the neck, & from cough, coming on paroxysms, he was admitted July 1st 1842, one month only before which, he noticed a pulsating tumour near the right sterno-clavicular articulations, & suffered severe pain in & around this situation; the sternal end of the clavicle was thrown considerable forwards & upwards, the pulse in the right radial artery was not affected; his voice was hoarse; he had cough, dyspnoea & neuralgic pains referred firstly to the situation of the clavical plexus. Six weeks before his death, the tumour enlarged considerably. He died of an acute attack of pneumonia. Cast No. 210. Prepn. B.c.2 N58'.

The handwritten note under the illustration reads 'Aneurism. Anastomosis – John Bell – Cylindroid Aneurism of [??]'. The handwritten note on the back reads 'A drawing by Templeton of a corroded preparation of a pulsating aneurismal(sic) by anastomosis – the aneurismal(sic) tumour was injected by Shekleton with wax, and afterwards the [?] part was corroded & placed under glass in the museum of the R. College of Surgeons – the wax has long since mouldered into dust, but the aneurismal drawing remains, it has been magnified and I believe imitated by Connolly – as I wished to exhibit it as the meeting of the British Association meeting at Dublin 1835'.
